The current world’s population is estimated to be around 6.4 billion with annual growth of 76 million and hence, it is estimated to reach 9 billion by year 2050. In next two decades, world’s two highly populous countries, China & India are expected to reach the population of 1.5 billion each i.e more than one third of the total world population of that time. It is alarming situation for the world to control this “population explosion”. Therefore, United Nations are urging countries specially highly populated countries to control their population.

The first question that hits most couples after marriage is ‘when to become parents?’ For some the choice is simple, while for others it can be baffling. Contraception can help control pregnancy till one feels that the time is right. Birth control methods incorporate the various modes of preventing pregnancy. Some even provide additional safety from sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS, herpes, syphilis etc.
One of the age-old methods of birth control is natural family planning. This means periodic abstinence from intercourse during the fertile days for the woman. These are approximately the 12th to the 20th day of the menstrual cycle, counting day 1 as the first day of periods. For this method to work, one requires a lot of planning and commitment. Another natural method is the withdrawal in which the man tries to pull out before ejaculating. This can prove to be risky as sometimes the pre-ejaculation fluid that contains sperms leaks before the withdrawal. Continue reading ‘How Do Birth Control Methods Work?’ »

There are several methods of birth control. The most common practices among couples are the use of contraceptives like condoms, pills, IUD and the natural family planning method which is the rhythm method. Out of the four mentioned, the latter is the most economical one since you do not have to purchase it on local drugstores. It is being used only with the guide of a calendar and it is here where the woman marks the first day of her menstrual period. By monitoring it daily, she could determine if it is her safe period or if she is on her fertile days.
However, there are some couples who are at a loss sometimes when using this method because they are not very much knowledgeable on when is the right time to have intercourse without fear of getting pregnant. Or when is the fertile period of a woman to observe abstinence or to use other form of contraceptive like condom to avoid the prospect of the woman getting pregnant. Other couples on the other hand are sometimes confused on when to start counting the number of days and whether it is before or after the first menstrual day that the woman is on her safe period. The natural birth control methods are methods used to avoid any pregnancies by refraining yourself on a regular basis or by interrupting the sexual act. These methods are to be used in the fertile period of your period, therefore on the days when you can get pregnant. The fertile period can be identified observing and marking any signs such as the basic body temperature, the cervical mucus or the position of the cervix. Regardless of the method you use, you need to take into consideration the fact that the spermatozoa only lives for up to seven days, while the ovule only survives for about seventy-two hours. You can use the calendar to check out the fertile period, the body temperature and the cervical mucus. You will get even more exact results if you combine two of the methods. This is a set of pills usually only available on prescription. The combined pill must be taken one each day for 21 days, starting on the fifth day after menstruation begins and ending on the 25th day. During the gap when the pill is not taken, bleeding takes place.
The combined pill contains two hormones, estrogen and progesterone, which control the reproductive organs to prevent ovulation. The mini-pill contains only one hormone, progesterone, and is a useful but slightly less effective alternative for women who cannot tolerate the combined pill.
