Contraception has given women and men the freedom to enjoy themselves without having to worry about pregnancy. Contraception has been around for a long time. Papyrus scrolls and cravings dating back to the ancient Egyptian civilization have shown that the people of those times knew about contraception. They used pastes made from honey and extracts of the acacia tree and contraceptive pessaries. The ancient Greeks also used herb and plant extracts to prevent pregnancies. In fact, each large civilization had their methods of contraception and is known because of the writings that they left behind.
Modern contraception techniques are similar to the ones used in ancient times. The women’s rights movement of the 30s and 40s brought contraception out into the open and changed how it was looked at. Now both men and women are equally responsible for contraception. There are now birth control options for both men and women, although the options available to women are far greater. One of the options available to women is the birth control patch and this article aims to provide information on the birth control patch.
The birth control patch is a thin, beige, square patch that sticks to the skin. It works by releasing hormones into the blood stream through the skin. The hormones on the patch (i.e. progesterone and estrogen) disrupt the reproductive cycle and prevent ovulation. Simply put, it stops the ovaries from releasing eggs. If there’s no egg to fertilize, then there’s no pregnancy. But that’s not all it does. It also thickens the mucus in the cervix making it difficult for sperm to reach any eggs that may have been released. In spite of all this, if a sperm manages to fertilize an egg, then it will have a hard time attaching to the wall of the uterus because the patch also causes the lining in the uterus to thicken. It is actually useful to note that, just before we dwell on figures which i am pretty sure you are well cognizant of, the majority of the causes which result to infertility which is related to age is often curable by means of natural methods. In the event you go through the data your chances of getting pregnant at 38 and older are certainly not that fantastic. The Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority in the UK reported that: “At 35 you’re half as fertile as when you were at 25; at 40 you’re half as fertile as when you were 35″ (HFEA 2005/6:12) Some of the most common reasons held responsible for the drop in fertility are:
1. Diminished ovarian reserve
2. Hormonal imbalances which could predispose you to irregular cycles and thinning of the endometrium.
3. Changes in cervical mucus making it more hostile to the sperm.
4. Poorly managed chronic conditions for example PCOS, endometriosis, excess weight, diabetes, hypothyroidism.
5. Asymptomatic infections such as chlamydia. Continue reading ‘Improve Your Chances of Getting Pregnant in Your 30s and Forties’ »
